Why to hold the first meeting of observatories againts LGBTIfobia in Barcelona?
OCH is one of the first entities in Spain with the objective of denouncing discrimination based on affective-sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression, fighting against LGBTI-phobia. For this reason, the entity wants the First Meeting to take place in its city (Barcelona).
One of the reasons why the meeting takes place in Barcelona is part of the initiative of the city and Catalonia, for being a supportive space where the rights of all people are respected regardless of ethnicity, religion, affective-sexual orientation or gender identity. In 2014, Catalonia passed the first law to guarantee the rights of lesbians, gays, bisexuals, transgender and intersex people and to eradicate homophobia, biphobia and transphobia (Law 11/2014).
The council of Barcelona presents the programme “Barcelona, a city of rights” with the intention of including a human rights-based approach in public policies, fighting against the discourse of hatred and discrimination. In addition, the city has the Office for Non-Discrimination, which is in charge of detecting human rights violations and maintains a close relationship with the local associative network.
